In-Home Treatment Approaches

Below is a summary of approaches commonly utilized to design effective treatment programs. Use of each is dependent on your needs, abilities, and circumstances.

I reserve the right to exclude any approach(es) that I deem not appropriate for your specific circumstance(s). For example, if you have history of a medical condition that increases your risk for harm from a specific treatment option, I will withold that approach.

Evaluation

An evaluation visit serves to gauge functional capacities so I can design a treatment strategy for your unique requirements. The scope of the evaluation is influenced by your needs and circumstances. This may include conducting interviews about daily activities, observing task performance and interactions with your environment, utilizing specific evaluation tools, or performing comparative assessments against age-specific benchmarks.

The information I gather from our free consult call will help design my plan for your evaluation.

Therapeutic Exercise

Therex Pic_edited.png

Therapeutic exercise refers to a wide range of physical activities that are specifically designed and prescribed to help individuals recover from injuries, improve their physical condition, and maintain their overall health. The primary goal of therapeutic exercise is to restore normal bodily function, enhance movement capabilities, reduce pain, and prevent further injury. This form of exercise is often a key component of rehabilitation programs and is tailored to meet the specific needs of an individual, depending on their health status, physical limitations, and recovery goals.

Therapeutic exercises can encompass a variety of activities, including but not limited to, stretching exercises for flexibility, strengthening exercises to build muscle, endurance exercises to improve cardiovascular health, balance and coordination exercises, and functional movements that simulate daily activities. Each exercise is aimed at improving specific aspects of physical fitness and function, ensuring a holistic approach to rehabilitation and health maintenance.

Physical therapists and occupational therapists are typically involved in prescribing and supervising therapeutic exercises as thorough knowledge of exercise physiology, pathophysiology, and research-based guidelines are essential to safely and effectively doing so. This requires careful assessment of an individual's condition in order to create a customized exercise program that safely challenges their current level of function and progress over time to facilitate steady improvement.

Through insightful monitoring and adjustment, therapeutic exercise can significantly contribute to an individual's recovery journey, enhancing their quality of life and enabling them to engage in their daily activities with greater ease and less discomfort.

How is Therapeutic Exercise different from exercises from a Personal Trainer?

The expertise required to prescribe and supervise effective therapeutic exercises far exceeds general fitness knowledge. Physical and occupational therapists develop a deep understanding of exercise physiology, pathophysiology, and the principles of tissue healing to through advanced education and practical experience working under the mentorship and license of an experienced physical or occupational therapist. Upon successful completion of these requirements, along with passing a national board-exam, a therapist is granted a license to practice within their discipline.

This experience allows the physical or occupational therapist to assess an individual's specific health status, physical limitations, and recovery goals to develop a tailored exercise regimen. It's a delicate balance to push someone enough to foster improvement without overstepping and causing further harm. This balance requires not only an understanding of the body's healing processes but also how different exercises can be modified to suit the varying stages of recovery.

The ultimate aim is to enhance an individual's quality of life, enabling them to perform daily activities with greater ease and less discomfort. The personalized, careful monitoring and adjustment of these exercises underscore the critical difference from general fitness training, highlighting the unique blend of science and sensitivity that therapeutic exercise requires.

Manual Therapy

Manual therapy involves hands-on techniques by clinicians to manipulate soft tissue, joints, and nerves. These techniques are utilized to reduce pain and improve movement. While exercises and stretches are often prescribed for independent practice, the application of manual therapy by a skilled therapist can amplify the benefits of treatment.

Electrical Stimulation (TENS and NMES)

What is TENS?

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is a therapeutic method that employs low-voltage electrical currents to alleviate pain. It involves a small device, known as a TENS unit, which targets nerves to either block or alter pain perception. This technique is utilized by healthcare providers for treating various acute and chronic conditions such as back pain, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, tendinitis, bursitis, and diabetes-related neuropathy.

What is NMES?

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) uses electrical current to enhance muscle strength, preserve muscle mass and strength when there's extended immobility, retrain specific muscles selectively, and manage swelling.

The Florida Board of Occupational Therapy requires an Occupational Therapist meet specific educational and experience requirements in order to use Electrical Stimulation devices in treatments. I have successfully met these requirements.

NOTE: You should not use electrical stimulation devices if you have a pacemaker, cancer, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), epilepsy, bleeding disorder, and/or certain other conditions.

Cup Therapy

Cup Pic (1)_edited.png

Cup therapy, known professionally as Myofascial Decompression (MFD), is a manual therapy technique designed to alleviate restrictions in connective tissue, enhancing the movement and flexibility of the soft tissues. By placing cups on specific areas of the body, a suction effect is created, generating negative pressure. This action helps to separate the layers of soft tissue, reducing stiffness and allowing for smoother movement between layers by decreasing the resistance among them.

This approach is unique in manual therapy because it utilizes a decompressive technique, unlike other methods that apply compressive forces. The suction provided by cup therapy increases the space within the musculoskeletal system, facilitating better movement and flexibility of tissues. This increase in space not only improves the glide and mobility of tissues but also contributes to the overall efficiency of movement, making MFD a distinctive and effective treatment for enhancing soft tissue function.

How is Cup Therapy different from Cupping?

Myofascial decompression and traditional cupping differ in several key aspects. Firstly, myofascial decompression is rooted in Western medicine principles and is supported and continuously improved by scientific evidence. This technique typically involves the application of cup(s) for no more than 5 minutes, with a focus on integrating active movement patterns and neuromuscular retraining to achieve lasting results. It also emphasizes a minimalist approach, using fewer cups for shorter durations to minimize the risk of negative effects.

On the other hand, traditional cupping is grounded in Eastern medicine traditions and often entails applying several cups for periods longer than 5 minutes. Unlike myofascial decompression, traditional cupping does not usually include movement science or neuromuscular retraining as part of the treatment. Additionally, many of the benefits attributed to traditional cupping lack scientific backing and have even been refuted by research.

What separates me from other coaches?

What sets me apart from other coaches is not just my extensive experience, but the depth of expertise I bring to the table, particularly in the realm of upper limb rehabilitation.

With thousands of hours experience guiding clients through their recovery journeys—whether it's pre-operatively, post-operatively, or non-operatively—I possess a nuanced understanding of the body's healing processes.

Moreover, my commitment to excellence is underscored by my attainment of the most respected board-certification in upper limb rehabilitation (CHT), a credential that is highly esteemed among surgeons and rehabilitation professionals.

This extensive blend of hands-on experience and specialized knowledge ensures that I make informed decisions to achieve optimal outcomes for my clients, distinguishing me in a field where understanding and expertise are key.

What is a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT)?

A Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) is a specialized occupational or physical therapist who has gained advanced certification in the treatment of hand and upper extremity conditions.

To qualify as a CHT, a therapist must have at least three years of professional experience and complete 4,000 hours of specialized practice in hand and upper extremity therapy. Additionally, they must pass a comprehensive certification examination to demonstrate their expertise in this area.

The role of a CHT encompasses providing accurate assessments, immediate care, and effective treatment to ensure a quick and cost-effective recovery. They offer a continuum of care that reduces the need for multiple medical providers, leading to faster recovery times, decreased medical expenses, and a quicker return to work and normal activities for patients. CHTs work in close collaboration with surgeons specializing in upper limb conditions to deliver the most comprehensive care possible.

CHTs are highly skilled in managing treatments for hand and upper extremity disorders, ensuring the best functional outcomes for their patients. Their advanced certification signifies a commitment to excellence in their field, requiring continuous professional development to adapt to changes and advancements in hand therapy.

CHTs are required to renew their certification every five years through ongoing education and practice to maintain their credential.
